Event Gates IPIO

8 Digital Output 4 Digital Input IP based IO Device

Device Overview

The Event Gates IPIO is an industrial IoT controller designed for digital monitoring and control.

  • Digital Outputs (DO): 8 Channels (Requires Interposing Relays)
  • Digital Inputs (DI): 4 Channels (Dry Contact Only)
  • Configuration: Logic states (NO/NC) are defined by software.

Wiring

This document will assume the user is indeed using a 24VDC power supply as recommended. If VDC rating is different than 24 then the reader should replace 24V mentioned in the next section with that VDC rating.

Understand the Output Type (DO1–DO8)

  1. The outputs provide +24 V when activated.
  2. The outputs provide 0 V when inactive.
  3. Each output is a 0.5 A max, 60 V SSR.
  4. Outputs must never drive motors, locks, sirens, or any inductive load directly.
  5. An interposing relay (relay bed with diode) is mandatory.

Wiring a DO to a Relay Bed (Required)

For each output channel:

  1. Connect IPIO DOx to Relay Coil (+).
  2. Connect Relay Coil (−) to the 0 V of the power supply.
  3. Connect IPIO V− (Pin 2) to the same 0 V of the power supply.

What happens:

  1. When DO activates, +24 V flows into the coil and the relay energizes safely.

Wiring the Field Device (Lock, Motor, Light, Siren)

  1. Wire the field device only to the relay contacts (COM, NO, NC).
  2. Never connect the field device to the IPIO directly.

Understand the Input Type (DI1–DI4)

  1. Inputs read 0 when nothing is connected.
  2. Inputs read 1 when +24 V is applied to the pin.
  3. Inputs do not detect connection to ground.
  4. Inputs detect the presence of +24 V.

Wiring a DI Through a Relay Bed (Recommended)

For each input channel:

  1. Connect +24 V to Relay COM.
  2. Connect Relay NO to DIx on the IPIO.
  3. Connect IPIO V− (Pin 2) to the 0 V of the same power supply.

What happens:

  1. When the relay closes, +24 V is passed into DI and the input registers ON.

This provides isolation and protects the IPIO from field wiring mistakes.

Common Ground Requirement (Critical)

  1. The power supply 0 V must be connected to IPIO V− (Pin 2).
  2. Without this connection, inputs and outputs will not behave correctly.

Wet Contact Warning

  1. Never connect an active external voltage directly to DI.
  2. Always use a relay contact to pass +24 V into DI.

Software

IPIO is running on its embedded firmware. Coded in Embedded C, this firmware is responsible of the whole IPIO functionality. IPIO Firmware supports following features.

Emergency Preset

IPIO is expected to be connected by a VIS service to fulfil its purpose. It defines the state in which it has no connection to any VIS service and it can be set to a predefined output state for all its 8 digital output to react to such an emergency case. Emergency preset can be set by the IPIO Manager.

Mute Input and Preset

VIS can be placed in stand-by mode via a designated input on the IPIO module. When this input is activated, the IPIO notifies VIS for logging purposes and forces all outputs into predefined preset states, ignoring any output commands from VIS during this period. Input values continue to be transmitted to VIS without modification.

VIS logs both mute and unmute events and can optionally send notification emails for these transitions. Detection and logging functions remain fully active during mute; only output control is affected. The video log clearly indicates the mute state during recorded events. By default, the mute input is assigned to input channel 1.

Precedence

Mute overrides emergency. If the IPIO is set to mute, it will remain its mute preset even if it loses all connection to VIS instances. If muted during emergency, IPIO will abandon emergency and resume mute preset.
