New page

Sling Safety
Problem
Slings are widely used in industrial lifting operations to secure and transport loads with overhead cranes. However, improper sling configurations present significant operational and safety risks. The primary risk of improper sling positioning is the load falling or flipping, which can have severe consequences. Beyond failures caused by the physical condition of the slings, this risk can arise under two specific conditions:

# The operator may forget to attach or detach a sling, resulting in an unbalanced load during lifting.
# All slings are properly detached, but one or more become stuck to the load, creating a hazard during an empty lift.

Solution
The Crane Safety AI Sling Safety Add-on uses two additional cameras—complementing the Operator Safety cameras—to detect slings, assess their positions, and determine the overall safety status. It enhances safety by preventing the crane from lifting when slings are incorrectly positioned. To detect and prevent stuck sling incidents, it also uses a load cell to monitor empty lifts—alerting the crane automation if the measured load unexpectedly increases.

Tooling
There are many sling and attachment types. Sling Safety Add-on is tested and can be utilized with different sling types. It is also possible to add and adjust support for equipment other than listed here with additional model support. For other equipment consult with your system integrator or Event Gates Services Team.

Chain Rope and Fiber Slings
Sling Safety supports segmentation mode for chain rope slings. This allows the system to be utilized without buoys, markers or indicators. Model improvements may be required specific to deployment.

Wire Rope Slings
Wire rope slings works in classification (object detection) mode and require buoys. Use of standards buoys which does not need a custom model is encouraged.

Lower End Fittings
Both segmentation and classification modes support sling hooks, grab hooks, or foundry hooks, with or without latches. Shackles can also be used. While lower end fittings are not individually detected, they can influence sling detection and should be considered before deployment.

Modes
Segmentation
Segmentation mode detects the whole sling, end to end, with multiple joints including their exact position on the image. A second algorithm calculates the path the joints creates and evaluates the <dfn>straightness</dfn> of the detected sling. In a lifting operation with four slings, each side is expected to have a sling attached to each corner and if it is properly attached to the load it is expected to draw an almost straight line.

Classification
Classification, also known as object detection, is an algorithm that identifies specific objects in an image using a pre-trained model and provides their locations. This mode requires buoys to be attached to the sling. The system detects the buoys and, based on their positions, determines whether it is safe to lift—empty or loaded. This mode is especially useful when no segmentation model exists for a specific sling type, as it can be used with any sling by detecting only the buoys.

How It Works
Segmentation
This is a straight sling. It is as tense as necessary because the load is already lifted. Both slings on the right hand side draw an almost straight line each. This is load is already lifted this position should be assumed to be safe.

And here is a load placed on the ground with slings attached but not stretched.

Stretched slings have a straightness value of 0.84-0.85 which drops below 0.70 when the load is placed on ground and hook is lowered.

This is the operator attending slings on one side:

The RoI shows green because both slings are on the corners and proportionately straight. But other camera has a different view:

On the opposite side of the image from the second camera it is visible that one of the slings is out of the region, not towards the corner anymore and other slings has a low straightness values of 59. This position is unsafe for both heavy and empty lifts, so the crane is signaled not to lift under any circumstances.

Fit for empty lifting
All slings are expected to be removed from corners. This is fit for empty loading:

Provisions for heavy lifting
The system signals the crane as safe for heavy lifting when the following conditions are met:

# Both slings are required to be placed towards opposite corners of the image.
# Slings must stretch proportionally, if straightness value of one of the slings increases while others remain low it may be a misplacement and lifting must be stopped.
# If the load cell detects a load while at least one of the slings has not reached the minimum straightness level, lifting must be prevented.

Provisions for empty lifting
The system signals the crane as safe for empty lifting when the following conditions are met:

# No slings in corner zones, all must be taken to the center.
# Crane automation must cross check with loadcell to make sure it does not show any load - in case weight increases it hints to a stuck sling.
